You will be using a conversational coaching model to coach your team members.
All seven questions here can also be edited in case more clarity is needed, or where answers might better fit a rephrased question.
When answering, you will be required to guide your Coachees to fill in the answers for seven primary questions. Each question will act as a follow-up from the previous question to allow a better assessment of the subject selected. Therefore, answers might be correlated to each other or overlap.
1. What’s on Your Mind to achieve your performance goal?
Here, you should focus on the performance issue at hand that needs improvement from your Coachee – this should primarily contribute to the target skill to be achieved.
2. And What Else can be done?
Beyond the answer for the previous question, this is to help your Coachee think of alternate ideas or other efforts that can ultimately help their journey to bettering their performance.
3. What’s the Real Challenge here for you?
After the identification of these measures, this question serves to help your Coachee properly identify any root issues, or potential roadblocks, that might be standing in the way of achieving their main objective, whether due to internal factors or extenuating circumstances.
4. What do you Need to attain your goal?
As the challenges have been identified, this question deeper explores what your Coachee needs, outlining the measures or steps to be taken in order to overcome any challenges in the process.
5. How can your Supervisor help you?
Now that the Coachee’s explained what assistance they might require, this is room for you to receive direct feedback from, and to help, your Coachee in being successful in their performance implementation.
6. What are the things you WILL do and NOT do, to accomplish your goal?
Based on what is needed and any help you can provide, this question encourages your Coachee to carefully investigate short- and long-term effects of choices made. These can be based on tangibility of action, and commit to these measures accordingly.
7. What is the Most Useful lesson here for you?
Finally, after your in-depth discussion, this final question will allow your Coachee some space to think about and contemplate what works for them. This can be based on their working style and behavior, and how it lines up according to all the steps discussed from earlier to actualize their improvement.
